The secret of GORE-TEX® fabrics is due to their revolutionary membrane, which contains more than 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. These pores are approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times bigger than a water vapour molecule. Water, in its liquid form, cannot penetrate the GORE-TEX® membrane, but water vapour can easily be drawn out.
An oleophobic substance (or anti-oil) is integrated in the PTFE structure (polytetrafluoroethylene) and allows the water vapour to escape while creating a physical barrier that prevents the infiltration of contaminating substances such as oil, cosmetics, insecticides and food into the fabric.
The result is a fully waterproof, windbreaking and breathable membrane.
